Frequently Asked Questions about coaching and coaching psychology supervision

Some questions to ask for people enrolled on our coach training programmes:

  • Is the coach or coaching psychologist accredited by a professional body as a coach, psychologist or supervisor?

  • Does the supervisor receive supervision for their own coaching, coaching psychology work?

  • Will the coach/supervisor be able to supervise the solution focused and cognitive behavioural coaching I am developing in my training?

  • Does the supervisor have professional indemnity insurance?

  • Does the supervisor provide a written supervisory contract?

  • Has the supervisor received training in the GROW model, solution focused and/or cognitive behavioural coaching?

  • The Centre for Coaching Accredited Advanced Diploma is accredited by the Association for Coaching (AC). If I later apply for individual AC accreditation, will they accept this supervisor’s reference?

Listed below are professional bodies which include listings of supervisors. However, it is important to have considered the above questions carefully before engaging a supervisor. We recommend that psychologists are supervised by BPS Chartered Psychologists and/or ISCP Accredited Coaching Psychologist or ISCP Accredited Supervisor (or equivalent if located outside of the UK). Group and individual supervision service is also provided by the National Academy of Coaching Psychology.
