Introduction to Animal-Assisted Coaching Practice

This one-day programme provides an overview to the theory, research and practice of Animal Assisted interventions and their application to the fields of coaching and coaching psychology. It has been designed for practitioners wishing to learn more about how Animal-Assisted based coaching interventions and techniques can be applied within their work.


This approach is based on research and theory that highlights the positive role and bonds between people and animals and considers ways in which this can be integrated within evidence-informed coaching conversations. 


This programme is run in association with our affiliated faculties, International Centre for Ecopsychology, and Centre for Stress Management and is approved by the International Society for Coaching Psychology (ISCP) for the purposes of Continuing Professional Development (CPD). ISCP members can obtain a 20% discount. (This programme is not suitable for practitioners who are already experienced and/or very knowledgeable about animal-assisted coaching or counselling)
 
CONTENT
This programme will include information about Animal-Assisted theory, research and practice and consider how a practitioner can apply it to their coaching practice. Different types pf Animal-Assisted Interventions will be defined and discussed in relation to coaching and coaching psychology practice.   Positive psychology and cognitive behavioural solution-focused approaches will be highlighted.

 

Learners are provided with a printed workbook. Also there is access to online resources including articles.  For the purposes of skills training, learners should be prepared to discuss one problem or issue in small group work. Normal rules of confidentiality apply.

AIM
•    To become knowledgeable about Animal-Assisted interventions and their application to coaching practice.

OBJECTIVES
•    To become knowledgeable about the theory, research and practice informing the field of Animal-Assisted interventions and its application to coaching.
•    To define Animal-Assisted coaching and consider ways in which different applications of this approach can be integrated within coaching conversations.
•    To become knowledgeable about the benefits of working within an Animal-Assisted coaching framework.
•    To become knowledgeable about using techniques and strategies from Positive Psychology and Solution Focused Cognitive Behavioural Coaching to facilitate Animal-Assisted coaching conversations, interventions and psychoeducation.
•    To reflect upon how Animal-Assisted based interventions could be integrated within an ethical coaching or coaching psychology practice.
•    To consider health and safety issues relating to working with animals and in outdoor setting.
•    To discuss how to obtain appropriate supervision for an Animal-Assisted coaching or coaching psychology practice.

TRAINER
The trainer is Dr Siobhain O’Riordan PhD CPsychol FISCP who is a Chartered Coaching Psychologist, and ISCP Accredited Coaching Psychologist. She has published widely on coaching psychology including on how to use the PARTNERSHIP animal centred coaching framework.
